Maumere is a name of little town situated in Flores island. The name was renown when Pope John Paul II visited it in October 1989. Even, he decided to stay a night there in Catholic High Seminary St. Petrus Ritapiret. Maumere became a night vatican town because of his visit. He also blessed Christ of the Kings statue. Now the statue is located near Sadang Bui port, a place where the first Christ of the Kings was destroyed because of Bomb in World War II.
Maumere was ever burried three years later after 1989 where Tsunami 1992. A half of the town tear down. Many people died. Beautiful beaches were burried and began to decompose. A half of Coral reefs were destroyed too. A Night Vatican Town changed images became camps of victims. Lucky, the Christ of The Kings stayed firmly on its position on the ground.

The name of Maumere had not been heard in 1700s. At the time, there was a region to deal in business among original habitants of Sikkaness, Bugis, Makasar and Holland (companie) which named Alok Wolokoli. The region was controlled by Sadok Lodang from Sadipung ethnic. Nowadays the ethnic has many lands which are situated in Iligetang. Because it was signaled as black market, the King of Sikkaness, Don Cormosemao da Silva ordered Mo’ang Juang to be commandati, a person who controlled harbor fee. Name of Alok Wolokoli changed into Alok Sikka. The eastern citizens name it Sikka Lotik or Little Sikka. Nowadays, the place has been a main part of Maumere which include Madawat, Kabor and Kota Uneng.
Long time ago, the eastern citizens name Alok Sikka as Sikka Lotik. The reason is the King of Sikka and his government was still centered on the south region of Sikka while Alok Sikka was just a region for trade. In 1917, Nong Meak, King of Sikka had just moved his palace to Maumere town by the suggestions of Holland pousthouder, G.A.Van Siek 1879. Meak’s palace has been a hotel named Lareska. His landscaap was sitated at the time in a place now has been a sacred place for Catholic people in Maumere named Kristus Raja, Christ of the Kings.
